Healing Isn't Just About the Injury

One of the things I've learned after years of treating runners, athletes, and active adults is that pain is almost never just about the body part that hurts.

People don't usually come see me when everything is going well. They come in when something has interrupted the life they love—when running suddenly hurts, training isn't progressing, or their body isn't responding the way it always has.

Most people arrive looking for a simple answer.

Is it my hip?

Do I need stronger glutes?

Should I change my shoes?

Sometimes those things absolutely matter - strength matters, mobility matters, training load matters, sleep, nutrition, and biomechanics all play an important role.

But they're rarely the entire story.

As physical therapists, it's easy to focus on what we can measure: range of motion, muscle strength, movement quality, imaging findings.

What often gets overlooked is everything else that's influencing how someone heals; How stressed have they been lately? How well are they recovering between workouts? Have they been carrying an enormous mental load? Are they constantly pushing through fatigue because they don't want to fall behind?

Our bodies don't separate physical stress from emotional stress. Your nervous system experiences all of it.

That's one of the reasons two people can have what appears to be the exact same injury yet recover completely differently.

The Question Everyone Asks…

One of the first questions I hear is:

"When can I run again?" Or... "When will I be back to normal?"

I understand why people ask. When running or exercise is part of your identity, losing it can feel incredibly unsettling.

But the most honest answer is often;

It depends.

Yes, we have research that gives us general healing timelines. Yes, we know roughly how long certain tissues typically recover. I can cite healing windows from the literature, which are often based on 18–23 year old student athletes or animal models, so they have limited generalizability but give us something to go off of.

But biology doesn't care about your race calendar.

Healing isn't linear, and no amount of determination can force tissue to recover faster than it's ready to.

What we can influence are the conditions that allow healing to happen.

The Bigger Conversation…

Instead of asking only "How quickly can we get you back?" I often ask different questions -

What changed before this injury happened? Has your training load changed How has your sleep been? How's work? Are you actually recovering, or are you just squeezing recovery into whatever time is left?

These conversations often reveal much more than an assessment of strength or flexibility ever could.

Sometimes the injury isn't simply bad luck.

Sometimes it's your body's way of asking for a different approach.

Healing Is Active, Not Passive

Recovery isn't about sitting around waiting for time to pass. It's about intentionally creating the environment where your body can do what it's designed to do. That means progressively loading tissues in the right way. It means improving strength, optimizing sleep, nutrition, and recovery. It means calming an overworked nervous system and making thoughtful adjustments rather than reacting out of fear or frustration.

Most importantly, it means recognizing that progress isn't always measured by today's pain score.

Sometimes progress looks like sleeping better, feeling less anxious, trusting your body again, and being patient enough to let healing unfold instead of constantly fighting against it.

My Goal as Your Physical Therapist

My job isn't simply to reduce your pain, it's to understand why your body became vulnerable in the first place, help you address the factors that contributed to it, and build a plan that's specific to you.

No two injuries are exactly alike because no two people are exactly alike.

When we stop chasing quick fixes and start supporting the whole person—not just the injured tissue—we give ourselves the best opportunity for lasting recovery.

Healing isn't about finding the perfect exercise or the perfect timeline.

It's about creating the right conditions for your body to heal.

And often, that's where the real transformation begins.
